🩸 My nose is bleeding in the first days after surgery. What should I do at home?

⚡

Oozing-type bleeding is expected in the first days. Rinse the inside of your nose generously, keep your head elevated, apply ice, and let a piece of ice melt in your mouth between your tongue and palate. Most of the time it stops without any intervention.

✅
How much is normal?

In the first 24–48 hours oozing-type bleeding is expected, and it usually stops within the first week. A slightly bloody discharge after rinsing and bloody mucus running down the back of your throat are normal during this period; mild ongoing oozing is not a serious problem.

👣
Step by step
  1. Use a spray to rinse the inside of your nose generously. If the spray cannot clear the clots, get a bottle-type sea water nasal wash from the pharmacy; once the clots are cleared, the bleeding stops faster.
  2. Place a piece of gauze or a tissue at the tip of your nose and secure it with tape.
  3. Rest with your head elevated.
  4. Apply ice to your nose (10 minutes every hour, ice application); also let a piece of ice melt in your mouth, between your tongue and palate.
  5. Do not blow your nose; avoid anything that could raise your blood pressure (exertion, hot environments, long periods in the sun).
  6. Send a photo or a short video so that we can judge the amount of bleeding (how to take one?).
🚨
When should you message us right away?

If, despite these measures, the bleeding is increasing, spurting out, or still continuing the next day, message us without waiting. If necessary, additional medication is recommended; if a bleeding point is seen when the silicone nasal splint is removed, the bleeding is stopped there.

📆
After the first week

It is usually caused by a small crust inside the nose drying out and coming off. Rinse with plenty of cold water (tap water is fine), do not blow your nose, only breathe out gently through it; for 1–2 days avoid strenuous activity, heat and sun. If it continues, message us. For bleeding months later: late bleeding.
